Carolien Scholtes (NL, 1958) studied painting and scenography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksacademie in the Netherlands. Until 2008 she worked as a scenographer, filmmaker and promoter of multi-disciplinary projects. Scholtes turned photographer in 2008. She builds setups in her studio, which she photographs or films, before destroying them again. In a unique way, her work both touches upon and escapes feelings of grief, loss and time. A change in tone that has everything to do with the brain damage she sustained in 2008, turning her world upside down and marking a caesura in life and work.
